Ingredients in DrFormulas® Nexabiotic® Colon Cleanse
This colon cleansing, stool softening supplement combines all-natural ingredients to help improve gut and digestive health in just two weeks.
Senna
Senna is a popular herbal laxative. Studies have found that senna has a distinct laxative effect, and that certain senna extracts may improve intestinal motility. Senna may also present antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Evaluating phytochemicals found that senna extracts contain a variety of tannins, flavonoids, and coumarins.1
Cascara sagrada
Cascara sagrada is an herbal remedy that comes from the bark of the California buckthorn. Cascara sagrada is a stimulant laxative that works by promoting muscle contractions in the intestines, which increases intestinal motility and helps to move stools through the bowels. Anthraquinones are the main active component and provide cascara sagrada with its laxaztive effects.2
Psyllium husk
Psyllium is a type of fiber that is made from the husks of seeds from the Plantago ovata plant. Psyllium husk is most often used as a bulk-forming laxative, which works by trapping more water in the intestines. This increases the amount of stool water, which eases the bowel movement and changes the colon’s environment.3
Psyllium may also act as a prebiotic. Prebiotics help to feed the beneficial bacteria in the gut, allowing the bacteria to grow and thrive. This may help to support a balanced, healthy gut microbiome, which may contribute to improved immune function and digestive health.3
Psyllium fiber has also been studied for its potential cardiovascular benefits. Up to 20 grams of psyllium per day may help to regulate cholesterol levels to support a healthy heart.4
Flaxseed
Similar to psyllium husk, flaxseeds are high in dietary fiber, which can help to improve intestinal motility and encourage regular bowel movements. Flaxseed is also a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to provide anti-inflammatory properties. Flaxseed also contains lignans, a type of plant compound that may present antioxidant properties. Studies on this rich combination of nutrients and fiber suggest that flaxseed may help to support a healthy heart and regulate weight while also promoting intestinal motility.5
Aloe vera
Used for centuries in traditional medicines, aloe vera offers a wide range of potential benefits. Along with its natural antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, aloe vera is commonly used as a laxative to relieve symptoms of constipation. These effects come from the anthroquinone glycosides found in the aloe vera latex.6
Licorice
More commonly used as a natural additive in teas and candy, licorice contains a variety of active compounds that may contribute to improved health. Studies have found that isoliquiritigenin, a flavonoid found in licorice root, may present a dual role in regulating gastrointestinal motility.7 Licorice root extracts have also been found to help relieve symptoms of indigestion.8
Lactobacillus acidophilus
Lactobacillus acidophilus is one of the most well-studied strains of probiotics. Its inclusion in this supplement may contribute to reduced constipation and improved digestive health, while also repopulating your gut with a beneficial strain of bacteria.9
