What is Lactobacillus acidophilus?

Lactobacillus acidophilus is one of the most widely used probiotic strains because of its efficacy. Its name means “acid-loving milk bacterium,” because L. acidophilus thrives on lactose (milk sugar) and turns it into lactic acid, which the body readily absorbs[1].

Lactobacillus acidophilus Uses and Benefits

Lactobacillus acidophilus assists your body with the following:

  • Controlling Candida albicans: Candida albicans is a form of yeast, which leads to thrush infections in the mouth and yeast infections in the vaginal tract. Because Lactobacillus acidophilus controls the growth of Candida albicans, it’s a very good probiotic for women[2].
  • Reducing diarrhea: Diarrhea has a number of causes, the main one being an infection. Probiotics like Lactobacillus acidophilus, along with Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Saccharomyces boulardii, can help prevent and reduce diarrhea[3].
  • Helping lactose intolerance: Lactobacillus acidophilus also reduces the effects of lactose intolerance[4].
  • Lowering cholesterol: Taking Lactobacillus acidophilus along with Bifidobacterium bifidum may lower levels of bad cholesterol[5].
  • Boosting the immune system: Beneficial bacteria such as acidophilus can help strengthen the immune system and ward off infection[6].
  • Reducing allergies: acidophilus may reduce the risk of allergies such as allergic rhinitis[7], or hay fever.

 Lactobacillus acidophilus Side Effects

People who are sensitive to lactose may experience stomach pain and discomfort from L. acidophilus supplements. This is not from the probiotic itself, but because some supplements may contain traces of lactose from the manufacturing process[8].

Some children who received L. acidophilus supplements for the first six months of life developed an allergy to cow’s milk[9]L. acidophilus is considered to be safe for most children and adults when used as directed. Common side effects are gas and bloating. Fifty percent of the people who report serious side effects suffered from immune problems[10].

Lactobacillus acidophilus should be used cautiously if you suffer from diabetes, as it may affect blood sugar levels or insulin sensitivity[11]

Lactobacillus acidophilus Overdose

Lactobacillus acidophilus overdose is considered to be extremely unlikely. If you think you may have taken too large a dose of this probiotic, seek medical advice as soon as possible.
