Saccharomyces boulardii
What is Saccharomyces boulardii?
Saccharomyces boulardii is a strain of probiotic yeast related to Saccharomyces cerevisiae (baker's yeast). It was first isolated in 1920 by French microbiologist Henri Boulard[1]. He noticed that the indigenous people of Southeast Asia would chew on the peels of the lychee fruit to ward off diarrhea and later discovered that the peels contained S. boulardii probiotic.
S. boulardii Benefits and Uses
Saccharomyces boulardii benefits are numerous, and include:
- Relieving diarrhea: boulardii is safe and gentle enough to be given to children to aid in alleviating diarrhea[2]. When added to infant formula, it can reduce infant diarrhea and support healthy weight gain[3]. It has also been shown to help with diarrhea associated with antibiotics, Clostridium difficile (or C diff) infections, as well as traveler’s diarrhea[4].
- Improving digestion: Diarrhea can cause poor absorption. boulardii can help improve digestion by making sure that your body absorbs the vital nutrients it needs[5].
- Reducing Helicobacter pylori: pylori is a type of bacteria that causes chronic infection in the stomach and small intestine[6]. S. boulardii helps prevent the growth of H. pylori particularly in combination with other beneficial probiotics.
- Boosting immune health: Probiotics may lower the risk of upper respiratory tract infections[7] in adults.
S. boulardii Side Effects
boulardii is considered to be safe for most infants, children, and adults when used as directed for up to 15 months. Common side effects may include gas or bloating. Taking S. boulardii on an empty stomach should reduce gas or bloating.
S. boulardii Overdose
It is considered to be extremely difficult to overdose on a probiotic supplement. Currently, there is no available information regarding cases of overdose related to S. boulardii. If you feel you may have accidentally taken too much S. boulardii, seek medical advice as soon as possible.
