    HairOmega® 3-in-1 Ingredients

    Saw Palmetto

    Saw Palmetto:

Saw palmetto is extracted from the fruit of Serenoa rapens tree, also known as the American Dwarf Palm Tree. This extract is rich in fatty acids, and phytosterols which help reduce cholesterol absorption. Saw palmetto is beneficial for urinary tract health, prostate health and may also help reduce hair loss.
Saw palmetto is one of the most popular herbal solutions for symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, or an enlarged prostate in men. This condition is cause by having excess DHT, (dihydrotestosterone). Excess DHT levels have been linked to prostate problems in men and hair loss in both men and women. Studies have found that saw palmetto extract can help to block the 5-alpha reductase, the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone).1
    Beta-Sitosterol

    Phytosterol Complex (including Beta-Sitosterol):

Beta-sitosterol is one of several phytosterols, or plant sterols, each of which has a similar chemical structure to cholesterol. It can be found in the foods such as pecans, avocados, and soybeans.

    Its health benefits include:

    • lowering cholesterol levels
    • reducing inflammation
    • boosting the immune system
    • improving prostate health
    • related urinary issues

A recent study concluded that just taking saw palmetto and beta-sitosterol together reduced the visible signs of alopecia.12 Like saw palmetto, beta-sitosterol has also been shown to help reduce symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, suggesting that it may interact with DHT and support hormonal balance.2

    Red Clover

    Red Clover:

This is a flowering plant, the blossoms of which are used medicinally. Red clover is one of the richest sources of isoflavones. Red clover is commonly used to support healthy hormone levels and bone density.3

    Grape Seed Extract

    Grape Seed Extract:

Grape seed extract comes from the ground seeds of red wine grapes. Over the past few years, several studies have shown that grape seed extract has numerous healthy benefits. This is largely due to its high content of an antioxidant known as resveratrol.

Grape seed extract has high content of resveratrol, which is beneficial for heart health. It may also improve blood circulation and indirectly improve hair growth.

Grape seed extract also contains high amounts of other antioxidant compounds, including phenolic acids, anthocyanins, and flavonoids. The high antioxidant content suggests a high potential to protect against oxidative stress, inflammation, and tissue damage.4

    B Vitamins

    B Vitamins:

B vitamins are a group of water-soluble vitamins that play a variety of complex roles in the body. B vitamins help your body process food and convert it into energy. They also assist with the formation of red blood cells. Biotin is an especially beneficial vitamin for hair growth. It is used to treat uncombable hair syndrome and weak nails.

As B vitamins are so easily found in foods, B vitamin deficiencies are rare. However, certain factors, including age, genetics, and pregnancy, require higher vitamin B intake. Deficiencies in these vitamins can result in certain diseases.5 For example, a deficiency in B6 and B12 can cause anemia.

B vitamins are found in foods such as cruciferous vegetables, legumes, poultry, fish, eggs, and meat. Some breads and cereals are fortified with B vitamins.

    The B vitamins are:

    • B1 (thiamine)
    • B2 (riboflavin)
    • B3 (niacin)
    • B5 (pantothenic acid)
    • B6
    • B7 (biotin)
    • B12 (cobalamin)
    • Folic acid

    Silica

    Silica (silicon dioxide):

Silica is a natural compound made from silicon and oxygen. As a nutrient it is vital for the health of hair, nails and skin. Dietary sources include brown rice, oatmeal, mangos, bananas, and spinach. As a nail and hair supplement, silica stimulates cell formation and metabolism, helping hair and nails grow stronger.

    Vitamin C

    Vitamin C:

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin. It is an essential nutrient, meaning that it is not synthesized within the body and can only be obtained via food and diet. Thankfully, many foods naturally contain vitamin C, while many brands now fortify foods with vitamin C. It plays a wide range of roles in the human body.6

While it is best known for its immune-boosting potential, vitamin C also helps with the healthy development and repair of bones, teeth and body tissue. It also contributes to the production of a protein known as collagen, which is vital for the formation of tendons, skin, and blood vessels.

Vitamin C also has powerful antioxidant properties so it helps reduce the damage caused by free radicals. Depleted levels of this vitamin can cause dry hair and skin, impaired immune function, and slow wound-healing. Although there is no collagen in the hair, the supporting structures between hair follicles is made of collagen.

Sources include citrus fruits, broccoli, red bell peppers, and kiwi fruit.

    Zinc

    Zinc:

Zinc is a trace mineral that is found in the body. Zinc plays a role in metabolic function, wound healing, and your sense of taste and smell. It also plays a vital part in many bodily processes and functions such as in cell reproduction, hormonal balance, proper absorption of vitamins, and in protein synthesis. All these processes are vital for proper hair growth such that an adequate amount of this mineral is needed to prevent hair thinning and loss.

Zinc is commonly found naturally in a variety of foods, including red meat, and chicken, and is commonly fortified in breakfast cereals and other processed foods.7

    Vitamin A

    Vitamin A:

Vitamin A, also known as retinol, is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays a variety of roles in the human body. It is important for reproductive health and ensures proper function of the heart, kidneys, lungs, and other organs.8 As well as keeping vision and the immune system healthy, vitamin A is also very important for the skin. It stimulates and strengthens the dermis – the middle layer of skin which contains blood vessels, elastin and collagen. This has the effect of reducing wrinkles and normalizing blood flow and maximizing UV protection.

    Cysteine

    Cysteine:

Hair is made of a protein called keratin. Keratin is fibrous and most prominently makes up the structure of your hair, nails, and skin. Keratin is a protective protein that is less prone to breakage or scratching compared to other cells in your body.9 Keratin is made up of individual amino acids, the most common being glycine, alanine and cysteine. This is an important hair growth vitamin. Studies performed in the 1990s demonstrated that supplements containing L-cysteine and B-vitamins improved hair growth in women with telogen effluvium.13

    MSM

    MSM:

MSM, short for methylsulfonylmethane, is an organic compound containing sulfur that has been studied for its anti-inflammatory properties and its potential to support hair growth.10 It is necessary for the production of keratin. Keratin is a protein that makes up around 90 percent of your hair, giving it strength and protecting it from sun damage and environmental toxins. Taking an MSM supplement can help strengthen your hair by boosting keratin production.

    Biotin Supplements

Biotin, also known as B7, is a water-soluble vitamin. This means that it dissolves in water, and any excess biotin is excreted out of your body naturally via your sweat and urine.11 Biotin has several functions in the body for both men and women including:

    • Converting food into glucose to produce energy
    • Producing amino acids and fatty acids as precursors to protein
    • Activating the metabolism of amino acids and proteins in fingernail cells and hair roots
    • Contributing to the health of skin and mucous membranes
    • Maintaining healthy hair growth
    • Contributing to the functions of the nervous system

Biotin contributes in a big way to how youthful and healthy your appearance is because it plays a major role in maintaining healthy skin, hair and nails. Biotin can be found in several foods, such as cauliflower, avocado, fish, legumes, berries, eggs, and mushrooms. If you want to be sure you are getting enough of this vitamin, it’s a good idea to take it in supplement form as supplements can provide higher doses to support skin, nail and hair growth.

A hair, skin, and nails biotin supplement may also be beneficial if you suffer high blood sugar because this condition may lower your biotin levels. Biotin can also help to regulate fatty acids by converting glucose, which may help support healthy blood sugar levels.

    Vitamins For Hair Growth

Hair growth supplements such as HairOmega® 3-in-1 work by:

    • Balancing hormones
    • Adding nutrients to hair
    • Reducing hair thinning
    • Strengthening hair
    • Improving circulation throughout the scalp
    • Providing vitamins for hair growth

Most importantly, DrFormulas® hair growth pills also include a DHT Blocker. DHT is a hormone and is believed to be a contributing factor in male and female pattern baldness. DHT causes hair loss by attaching itself to hair follicles and shrinking them. In female hair loss, elevated DHT levels may also cause thinning of the hair. HairOmega® 3-in-1 helps block DHT, thus promoting hair growth.

    Ramped up Hair Loss

After being on HairOmega 3-in-1 for about 2 months, I started experiencing a disturbing uptick in hair shedding...by the handfuls. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a "shedding window" followed by hair regrowth? Giving this a 3-star rating as I am unsure if this should be expected and will reverse. Thank you!
