What is Maca Root?

Maca root (Lepidium meyenii) is a perennial herb native to Peru. Maca is mainly grown for its nutritional and health benefits. Usually, after harvesting, it is dried and ground to produce a type of flour. Macca roots can also be boiled, roasted or mixed with milk to form porridge. Regarding its health benefits, historically Maca has been used for the enhancement of sexual performance

Maca Root Benefits and Uses

Maca has recently become a very popular supplement. As well as being an excellent source of protein and carbohydrates, maca has a low fat content and is rich in fiber. It also contains iron, copper and vitamin C[1].

With aging, reduced sexual libido becomes more common. Studies have shown that Maca is effective for the support of sexual health and increased libido[2]. It is so effective that it may improve libido after just six weeks of regular supplementation[3].

The decline in estrogen which occurs during menopause can lead to unpleasant symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swings. Maca may improve these symptoms[4] and well as supporting bone and joint health[5].

Maca Root Side Effects

Maca is considered to be likely safe when taken in the small amounts found in food items. It is also considered to be possibly safe when taken as a supplement with a recommended dose lower than three grams per day for up to four months.

Common side effects may include heartburn, indigestion, and elevated blood pressure.

There is insufficient information regarding whether Maca is safe to take during pregnancy and breastfeeding, so it should be avoided at these times.

If you suffer from a hormone-sensitive condition such as ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, breast cancer, uterine fibroids, or endometriosis, you should not take a Maca supplement.

You should avoid Maca if you are taking medication for a thyroid-related condition, as it may increase iodine levels.

Currently, there is no information available regarding whether Maca may interact with certain medications.

Maca Root Overdose

Taking too much Maca may cause a worsening of hormone-related symptoms or an elevated heart rate. If you think you have taken too much of the supplement, stop taking it straight away and seek medical advice.
