What is Quercetin?

Quercetin is a plant flavonoid that is found in many foods including green tea, berries, onions, pepper, dark leafy greens, tomatoes, and citrus fruits. Like other plant flavonoids, quercetin supports immune health, reduces the risk of allergies and supports a healthy inflammation response[1]

Quercetin Benefits and Uses

Because quercetin has anti-oxidant properties and can scavenge free radicals, it reduces the oxidative stress on the body and supports healthy aging[2]. This can benefit the health of hair, skin, and nails.

Quercetin plays an important role in regulating the immune system[3]. It does so by regulating kinase and phosphatase signaling pathways; these are proteins which are essential for proper cellular function.

Clinical research has shown that quercetin supports respiratory health because of its antihistamine effect[4], which can alleviate symptoms such as a runny nose and watery eyes.

Quercetin has also been shown to support hair growth[5] by reducing PGD2, a prostaglandin which is linked to inhibited hair growth and hair loss.

Flavonoids such as quercetin support cardiovascular health by boosting blood circulation[6] and inhibiting cholesterol oxidation, thus preventing LDL cholesterol to adhere to the artery walls[7].

Quercetin Side Effects

Quercetin is generally considered safe at doses lower than 1 gram per day. Higher doses are reported to cause kidney complications. Side effects may include upset stomach and headache.

Quercetin may cause interactions with certain medications including:

  • Antibiotics: quercetin may reduce their effectiveness.
  • Anticoagulants: quercetin may increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Chemotherapy: quercetin may enhance the effects of the cancer medications cisplatin and doxorubicin.
  • Corticosteroids: quercetin may cause this medication to stay in the body longer than normal.
  • Cyclosporine: quercetin may interfere with the body’s absorption of this immunosuppressant medication.
  • Fluoroquinolones: quercetin may reduce the effectiveness of these antimicrobial drugs.

Quercetin Overdose

There are currently no reports of quercetin overdose or how much would constitute an overdose. If you feel you have taken too much quercetin, stop taking the supplement straight away and seek medical advice.
